Dear Mr. Walker:
Thank you for contacting me regarding future funding levels for diabetes research programs. It is good to hear from you.

As you know, diabetes is a devastating disease that is growing at an epidemic speed. In 1980, 5.76 million Americans were diagnosed with diabetes. Currently, The American Diabetes Association reports that 25.8 million Americans have diabetes.

I am committed to ensuring that all Americans with diabetes have access to the necessary care required to combat the disease. It is also important that we continue to devote adequate resources to diabetes research. Recently, I signed a letter sent to the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration urging them to move quickly on the next phase of research for the artificial pancreas. This device is an important advancement in medical technology that could reduce the complications that individuals with diabetes face on a daily basis by enabling patients to monitor and control their glucose levels with more accuracy and precision.

The final fiscal year (FY) 2011 Continuing Resolution included $30.7 billion for the National Institute of Health (NIH), and the President's proposed budget for FY 2012 includes $31.83 billion for the NIH and $5.89 billion for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I understand the vital importance of the roles the NIH and CDC play in our country's constant battle to find cures for not only terminal diseases, but also the non-life threatening diseases that many Americans struggle with on a daily basis.

I believe that Congress must take a thorough look at the entire federal budget to find ways to resolve our nation's fiscal crisis. As we seek to make these difficult decisions and the Senate proceeds to consideration of the FY 2012 budget, I will keep your thoughts and views in mind.
